Edward James Hayward, Age 23
Private, 24532, 8th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
Edward was the eldest son of the late Mr Thomas Hayward and his wife Ellen, who in 1901 were living at 11 New Street, Dawley.
He had joined the army shortly after the outbreak of the war and had previously been employed at the Madeley Wood colliery like his Father; he had also been a scholar at the Dawley Wesleyan Sunday School.
Edward died of smallpox contacted on active service on the 24th December 1917 in Mesopotamia (Now Iraq) and lies buried in the Baghdad North Gate Cemetery in Grave III.J.6.
On Edward's death his possessions were returned to his sister, Mrs M Briscoe of Bray Buildings, 11 Crown Street. She had to sign and return the form to the Infantry records office at Shrewsbury
